To address the risks of motorcycling, before and after a fall, motorcyclists use personal protective equipment (PPE, or more commonly “motorcycle gear”). Many developed countries now require certain articles of PPE, and manufacturers and governments recommend its extensive use

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other garment designed to protect the wearer’s body or clothing from injury by blunt impacts, electrical hazards, heat, chemicals, and infection, for job-related occupational safety and health purposes, and in sports, martial arts, combat, etc. body armor is combat-specialized protective gear. In British legislation the term PPE does not cover items such as armour.

PPE can also be used to protect the working environment from pesticide application, pollution or infection from the worker (for example in a microchip factory). The protection may be important in both ways, as with the use of disposable gloves by surgeons and dentists.

Bright colors and retro reflective strips are common on quality equipment.
  • Abrasion Resistance — Thick, tough leather provides the most abrasion resistance in a crash, but fabrics such as Cordura, Kevlar and ballistic nylon provide significant protection too. In addition, fabrics are generally cheaper, easier to maintain, waterproof, and more comfortable in hot weather. Thick leather, which affords the most abrasion resistance, can be uncomfortable in temperatures exceeding 85 °F (29 °C) and above 100 °F (38 °C) may cause heat stress & loss of control with insufficient fluid replacement. Some PPE may be constructed of fabrics made into a ‘mesh’ that provides cooling and a stable surface for the attachment of padding.
  • Padding — Quality jackets and pants provide significant extra padding in the vulnerable joint regions described above. This can take the form of simple foam padding, or dual-density foam that stiffens when compressed, sometimes with plastic or carbon fiber outer-shells that distribute the impact across the pad. Integrated pieces can be found in some jackets.
  • Weather Protection — One important aspect of PPE not mentioned above is protection from the elements. Extreme weather can make a long ride unbearable or dangerous. PPE provides protection from wind, rain and cold.

The Rise and Fall of the Two Stroke Powered Quad

There’s nothing quite like the scream of a two stroke engine and the smell of burning engine oil is always right there with that scream. In the world of motorsports its sound is unmistakeable. Dirt bikes would see the two stroke engine utilized on early models because of the smaller size. Snowmobiles would also follow suit because of the light weight. It was only a matter of time before the atv would make use of the technology to improve response, increase speed, and reduce weight. The first two stroke quad made it to market back in 1985. The Suzuki Motor Corporation would design and release the Quad Racer, a two stroke racing quad with a 246cc powerhouse. Although two stroke engines were appearing on earlier ATC’s from the big four manufacturers (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha), this quad in particular would set off a revolution of racing and sport riding. The atv brought more stability to the table with four wheels versus the three wheeled atc’s. Engine size and power was utilized far better on quads when riders became more apt to keeping their wheels beneath them. The atc was considered unstable and its production would eventually be outlawed, but the two stroke quad would flourish in the coming years with all the major manufacturers contributing their own version.

The two stroke engine was first invented back in 1878 but the first patented two stroke motor, a v-twin, didn’t come along until 1904. The two stroke design has certain advantages and disadvantages when compared to a four stroke engine. One stroke equals one cycle, therefore a two stroke engine completes its energy production using half the cycles of a four stroker. This is because two stroke engines have no valves. The fuel intake, fuel ignition, and exhaust emission all happen on each cycle (or revolution) of the engine. Four strokes in comparison use a camshaft and a series of valves to separate all the phases of energy production. These additional components add overall weight to the four stroke engine. The two stroke however must burn oil during its ignition phase. This accounts for the blue or grey smoke which emulates from every two stroke exhaust port. Two stroke engines require oil to be injected simultaneously with the fuel or pre-mixed in the fuel tank. Two strokes also burn more fuel versus the four stroke powerplants. Citing emissions, noise pollution, and higher fuel usage, the two stroke engine has all but been eliminated from automotive and street motorcycle market, but the lightweight simplicity and sheer horsepower per cubic centimeter of these engines allowed them to flourish in the offroad market.

In their heyday, quad manufacturers flooded the market with their own two stroke engines. Beside the big four, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha, other big players like Polaris as well as a variety of small scale Chinese manufacturers have capitalized on two stroke power for their quad atvs. But new, lightweight, and more efficient four strokes would eventually become the accepted powerplant for the majority of production quads. The two stroke has been completely dropped from the lineup of most manufacturers in favor of reasonably quiet, fuel efficient, technologically advanced four strokes. Sport quad riding and organized racing have also, for the most part become four stroke events. As quickly as the two stroke engine entered the atv industry, it has, for the most part, fallen by the wayside even with new advances in emission technology, including reductions in odor as well as smoke.

Most people who ride motorcycles, from enthusiasts to occasional riders, have at one time or another thought about getting away for a long road trip. For such a trip, planning is a very important part of the preparation. In this article we’ll talk about what to pack on your bike.

 

Make a list

First, after the initial rush of energy and excitement when you finally are able to arrange your dream trip, the first thing you need to do is relax and start making a list of all the things you might need. Some suggestions:

 

  1. Road map. You can buy fold up maps, or if your cell phone has internet access, you can use one of the many free map services (Yahoo, Google, Mapquest). If you really want to get fancy, you can purchase a navigation system for your motorcycle.
  2. Tool bag/kit. Don’t forget to bring along some simple tools in case the need for minor repairs arises. Cable ties, screwdrivers (Phillips and standard), pliers, a couple of standard size wrenches, and a repair manual may save the day in case of a problem. You certainly don’t want to be out in the middle of nowhere and be stuck because of a minor problem that could have been easily fixed with a simple tool.
  3. Clothes. Keep an extra set of clothes handy, and don’t forget your rain gear. It’s best to pack the rain gear last, so you can get to it in a hurry if a sudden rainstorm kicks in.
  4. Snacks. You should pack some light snacks for the road—nuts, dried fruit, power bars, granola bars, water, and a couple candy bars are ok if you have a sweet tooth. Don’t forget to take care of your trash.
  5. Think of anything else you might want or need on your ride, and include that on your list. You can always remove non-essential items if you are getting too loaded down.

 

After you make your list, gather everything together, and go through each item, checking it off. It may seem like overkill, but sometimes this is the stage where you remember a critical item that you forgot when making your initial list.

 

Packing

Make sure that as you pack your luggage, the weight is balanced on both sides of your bike. An off balance bike is harder to handle, takes much more energy, and safety is always a major issue for riders. When your bike is fully packed, take it on a short test drive to ensure that everything is packed tightly and well-balanced.

 

Planning for your long bike trip is essential to the enjoyment of the ride, you won’t have to spend time (like I do!) wondering what you forgot, you can just relax and enjoy being on the open road.

Summer time is here and going full swing, so that means you must have a vacation coming up. This article shares some tips to make your summer motorcycle vacation a safe, relaxing, and fun time.

 

First up is making sure your bike is healthy enough for a long trip. Your best bet is probably to take your bike into the shop, and have an experienced mechanic look things over, but if you can do it on your own, check the following:

 

  1. Oil. Do you need an oil change?
  2. Fuel filter
  3. Spark plugs
  4. Chain and belt tension
  5. Tires
  6. Lights
  7. All fasteners

 

Again, if you notice a problem with any of the above parts, the best thing to do is have an experienced mechanic do the work for you to ensure your bike is in the best shape possible for your trip.

 

When your motorcycle is in tip-top shape, it’s time to get yourself ready. When going on a long trip it’s important to pack wisely.  Do you really need to take excessive amounts of clothes or other items? Try packing trial size toiletries like toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, etc. Make a list of the things you absolutely need and work from there. If there are things you can easily  pick up on the road or at your destination, then there is no need to bog down your bike with that extra stuff.

 

Once you have decided what you are going to pack (you are packing lightly right?), then make sure you balance the load on your bike evenly. If your bike is packed top heavy, the load isn’t balanced properly, your motorcycle will be more difficult to handle, which can cause you to fatigue easier, and that becomes a safety hazard. Check, double check, and recheck that your luggage is secure on your bike. You don’t want stuff flying off your bike on the highway, and neither does anyone else.

 

When you are finally ready to hit the road, always remember safety first. Don’t be in a hurry to get to your destination. When you are on a motorcycle vacation, the ride there and back should be as enjoyable as the time you spend at your destination. Heck, take some back roads, take some extra stops so you can stretch your legs, take a break to have a snack or a drink (NON-alcoholic of course!). The reason you are taking your bike on a vacation is to enjoy the open road, don’t forget that. In the past I’ve had some rides that was a hectic whirlwind to get where I was going, and the ride became more of a pain that the relaxing jaunt that it should be.

 

So relax and enjoy your time on the road, and at your vacation destination.
