As previously mentioned, when first starting out in off-road racing, such as supercross motorcycle racing, it is advised that you get as much safety equipment as you possibly can. These items should include a helmet, goggles, boots, pants, gloves, chest protector, knee braces, as well as a back brace. All of these items are important to your safety, including the clothing.  You should never go off-road riding in shorts or in a tank top. You are advised to purchase real racing gear, such as a uniform. If and when you need to purchase supercross safety equipment, you are advised to purchase it around the same time that you purchase your motorcycle.

Don’t let Brake vibration ruin your vacation

As we are out on the roads almost every day, either as a driver or a passenger, it can be easy to forget how dangerous an occupation driving actually is.  It makes sense that people are not scared of driving, this would not be remotely beneficial as more would panic or react poorly in situations.  Remembering to act sensibly and with caution, however, is vital.  Driving recklessly and failing to follow feed limits or pay heed to road signs can lead to accidents.  At best, road accidents are merely an inconvenience, at their worst, they can lead to multiple fatalities.

In the summer months, families or groups of friends often travel long distances, holidaying in parts of the country they have not seen before. They are often visiting relations, theme parks, the coast or national parks.  In the excitement before setting off on a long journey for a family break it can be easy to overlook certain essential car checks, even though many of these are pure common sense.  The majority of drivers know their vehicles well – they can recognise potential warning signs, such as a change in the performance of the vehicle, a change in steering or maybe brake vibration.  If in any doubt about whether a vehicle is roadworthy, it is certainly advisable to get it checked out by a qualified mechanic before venturing out on long trips.  Though the majority of drivers do not feel comfortable investigating problems such as brake vibration, there are numerous things that can be done to keep a vehicle running smoothly, so before a road trip or another long journey, think about checking the following –
- the tires.  Make sure the tread depths meet the legal limit, and ensure the tire is free of bulges and other damage.  Also measure tire pressure with a suitable gauge to make sure all tires are inflated to meet the vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines.

- the levels of oil and other fluids under the hood.

GPS Navigation for Motorcycles

An essential part of touring is knowing where you’re going – and if you’re not the type to trust your instincts when you’re on unfamiliar ground, some kind of navigational aid should be a vital part of your equipment. There’s nothing worse than getting lost in the middle of nowhere!

The days having your entire touring group pulling to a halt to gather around a cumbersome folding map are long gone – and it’s satellite navigation, also called global position system (GPS) units that have taken over. They’re lightweight, easy to use and you can have it right there in front of you as you ride. Too easy!

As with most things in life, there is a range of options when it comes to GPS units. From the bare-bones basic to top-shelf with all the bells and whistles. But what will you really need?

Three Styles of GPS
There are three types of GPS that are suitable for use on a motorcycle. For starters, there are the basic hand-held types used by hikers. These offer an easy-to-use interface, and can be linked up to a laptop computer to help you plan your trip. They can also be used while boating and off-roading, if that’s what you’re into.

The downsides to a hiker-style GPS are that the features and menus can be tricky, and you’ll need to sort out a mounting system if you want to keep one eye on the map and the other on the road. 

Next up are the motorcycle-specific devices, such as the TomTom RIDER. The RIDER has been designed with motorcyclists in mind – it comes with a specialized mounting that the unit clips into when you need it, and has large touch-screen controls, ideal for plotting your way around, even with thick winter gloves on. The housing has been designed to handle the rigors of life on two wheels, and is weather-proof.

The RIDER also has a cool headset attachment, which rests inside your helmet and can relay spoken commands to the unit via Bluetooth, so you won’t even need to take your hands of the bars – just tell the GPS you want to head “Home” and it’ll plot you a route and lead you there.

The third type of GPS unit that motorcyclists tend to use are the GPS / PDA hybrids, such as a Blackberry with GPS software loaded on. The upsides are that it doubles as a communications device, has a large screen and is highly portable. The downsides… well, let’s just say that if you’re out cruising on a weekday, you probably don’t want the office to be able to email you!

Other Factors to Bear in Mind
Once you’ve decided what kind of GPS you want to look at, there are more factors that you’ll need to consider before making a purchase. Such as, how good is the battery life on the model you want? Can you have it wired into your bike’s electrical system so that it draws power while you’re on the road? Is the GPS accurate enough? Can it be updated?

They’re all good questions – and they’ll all need answering before you fork over your pay check. Good battery life is essential – on a long trip (six hours or more), you’ll need to consider a unit that has exceptional battery life. What could be worse than getting six hours from home, relying on the GPS for directions, only to have the batteries die when you need them the most? If you decide on a cheaper unit with lesser battery life, the lesson here is simple: carry spare batteries! Most handheld GPS units run on 4, 6 or 8 ‘AA’ size batteries, so they’re easy to source and carry.

To avoid the issue of battery life, consider having the GPS hard-wired into your bike’s electrical system. For the most part, GPS units draw very little current, and because the battery is being recharged by the alternator while the bike is running, your battery power will not be compromised.

As for accuracy, most road cruisers won’t need to have a super-accurate GPS. Most units on the market at the moment offer accuracy up to 26 feet. The more accurate models (which use a system called Wide Area Augmentation System) are good for accuracy within a 9-foot radius.

The final, and perhaps most important factor for many riders, is price. How much do you want to spend on a GPS, and how do you get the best bang for your buck?

Starter models, such as the Magellan Roadmate are available from $250. For the better models you can pay anything up to $1400. Widely regarded as the best value for money for motorcyclists is the TomTom RIDER, which retails around $700. It’s got all the features riders need, including door-to-door address route plotting anywhere in the United States – it’s a winner.

Things to Remember:
A GPS system is only as good as the maps it has loaded into its memory – an out of date map on the GPS is as bad as an outdated folding map. Make sure you keep your GPS maps as up to date as possible.

GPS units don’t work well undercover. They rely on being in line-of-sight contact with satellites outside earth’s atmosphere, and anything – including trees – can interfere with the signal. If you spend a lot of time on roads that run through forested areas, it’s worth considering one of the new SiRF Star III Chipset models. They offer superior coverage in leafy areas.

Security for GPS units is an issue – because of their portability, they’re very easy to steal. Make sure yours has a secure place to rest when you stop for lunch.

Leather saddlebags are soft and flexible. Lighter than other materials, leather makes it easier to transport whenever you need to remove the saddlebags. While leather is waterproof and stain resistant, it still need conditioning and cleaning to keep it looking good.

Plastic (fiberglass) is less flexible than leather, but sturdiness is key. Since plastic is heavier than leather, you may want to keep your saddlebags attached to the motorcycle’s frame. Plastics are more waterproof than leather and less vulnerable to stains. Plastic  bags remain durable with less maintenance.

Brake pads are not what they used to be

Winterizing a motorcycle is an important task often ignored by even the most avid motorcycle riders.

Motorcycle winterizing is simple and can be accomplished for cheaply.

If you plan to park a motorcycle outdoors be sure to cover the vehicle with a tarp to protect it from water damage.

Store the motorcycle with a full tank of gas to prevent room for water to buildup in the tank.

President Obama’s financial overhaul may have an effect on the financial institutions of manufacturers like BMW and Harley-Davidson, manufacturers that provide buyers with loans directly from their institutions.

These companies own state-chartered industrial loan companies that benefit from federally insured deposits and lend money, but are not regulated as heavily as normal banks. The Obama administration’s plan would force companies with ILC charters to register as bank-holding companies with the Federal Reserve.

Does this mean you won’t be able to get that loan for the tire burning, corner cutting sport-bike you’ve been eyeing up? No, it may be more difficult for first time buyers to obtain a loan though.  It does mean that you might have to go to a real bank to get your loan. The good part is you may not get charged the 20-something percentage rate that comes along with borrowing from some of these institutions.

And don’t think these companies will back down without a fight. Even if regulation makes it more expensive, those firms that depend on providing such loans will presumably accept the stricter oversight that comes with owning a bank.

So, if you’re under the age of 20 years old, you might not be able to go out and buy a brand new R1 or a BMW K1300S, but I’m sure there are tons of bikes that you can afford without signing your life away at the dealership for 25 percent interest.

Brake vibration can throw you off track

If any car or bike driver notices brake vibration, it is very important for them to determine where the vibration is situated. Obviously, it may be coming from the front of the vehicle or it could be hailing from the rear of the vehicle. It may seem as though it wouldn’t matter where it comes from because any vibration should be viewed as serious, but there may be different solutions to the problem depending on where the brake vibration is originating from.

If the vibration appears to be coming from the front of the car, there is a very good chance that it may be noticeable as a flutter of the steering wheel. This is likely to be very off putting to the driver but it may have more serious consequences than just being uncomfortable or unpleasant. It has been noticed that a driver who is experiencing a front brake vibration may be inclined to take their foot away from the brake in the hope that this would be enough to stop the vibration from occurring. Anything which interferes with the way a driver usually commands their vehicle is not welcome and could lead to problems or difficulties. This means that this is a very serious condition and if it is noticed, should be focused on and fixed as quickly as possible.

If however, the vibration feels as though it is originating from the rear of the vehicle, through the pedals of the brake or even the bodywork or seats if the vehicle, then the problem is likely to be coming from the rotors at the rear of the vehicle. It can be seen that knowing which rotors to examine first is of use as it is not of benefit to start messing about with brakes and rotors if it is not required. If one pair are clearly struggling to work at full power, then focusing on them may be enough to rectify any problems and leaving the good brakes in working order. Brake vibration may not seem to be the most serious condition or ailment that can affect a car, but with the brakes being one of the most important components of a vehicle, it is obvious that any problem needs to be rectified fast.

Although the brake vibration may have occurred because of an incident or jarring, a common reason for this vibration is the car having covered a lot of mileage, and this should be noted by the owner. If long distances are being covered, it is important to continually check and service many of the key components of the vehicle to ensure that everything remains in good working order. It is easy to believe that everything is ticking along smoothly because there does not appear to be any issues or problems, but the only time you may find out if there is a problem is when it is too late. In this case, it is always better to stay ahead of the situation and ensure that your car or bike parts are checked on a regular basis.
